Priority issues & challenges

1. Poor road infrastructure

Heavy industrial cargo traffic combined with pending sub-divisional engineering repairs creates critical logjams and severe potholes across central arteries like Defence Road and Shahabpura Road.

2. Health

The public sector lags behind the district's economic growth, leaving its population of 4.49 million heavily reliant on expensive private setups due to a severe shortage of specialized beds in state facilities.

3. Water crisis

Unregulated industrial pumpage has drastically lowered the deep water table, while shallow aquifers face severe contamination from heavy metal runoff like chromium and arsenic.

4. Unemployment

Despite a globally integrated export economy, structural underemployment persists as high dropouts at the matric level limit youth from transitioning into higher-value technical and digital roles.

5. Environmental challenges

The intense concentration of tanneries, surgical units, and sports manufacturers causes high environmental degradation, pushing airborne particulate matter into unhealthy thresholds while discharging toxic effluent directly into open drains.

6. Infrastructure

Congestion and wear on export logistics routes, link roads to tehsils (Daska, Pasrur, Sambrial), and rural areas affect supply chains. Provincial schemes for widening and sewerage/drainage are advancing under the FY 2025–26 ADP.
